BLUE EARTH– Although he had not planned on any action being taken on a proposed highway bonding bill at the Faribault County Board meeting on Tuesday, Public Works director Mark Daly was told by the commissioners they wanted to keep the ball rolling.

“I don’t think there is any doubt this (bonding bill) is going to pass,” commissioner Greg Young said. “I think we should keep moving forward.”

With that in mind, the commissioners voted to direct county auditor/treasurer Darren Esser to contact the bonding company the county utilizes and start firming up the numbers.

“We will still have to have a vote on whether to proceed with the bonding bill,” Young commented. “But, this way we keep moving forward.”

Daly also informed commissioners he had received a bill from the Drainage Department for $495,557.

“Darren had warned me a bill was coming,” Daly noted. “I knew it was covering expenses which had not been billed out earlier, but I had not budgeted for this large of an amount.”

Esser explained most of the invoices included in the bill should have been sent out before he had taken office.

“We are trying to make things current,” he shared.

The commissioners agreed with Daly’s suggestion to use $234,031 from the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) to pay off part of the bill. They also directed Esser and Daly to meet and work out a payment plan for the remaining balance.

“In the future, it appears likely I will have to budget $50,000-$75,000 each year to cover drainage expenses,” Daly commented.

In other business:

— The commissioners passed a motion to transfer a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer from the Sheriff’s department to the Faribault County Assessors Office at a cost of $2,000.

— A motion was passed approving an increase of $27,000 to the 2021 budget for the purchase of 21 automated external defibrillators (AED). Five are needed at the courthouse, Ag Center and Public Works Department while the other 16 are needed for the Sheriff’s Department/jail use.

— Approved the hiring of Emily Bonin as a welfare fraud investigator.
