ANN ARBOR, MI — The Ann Arbor City Council has approved $120,000 from the street, bridge and sidewalk millage to fund filling of sidewalk gaps on Newport and Sunset roads.

The Newport/Sunset sidewalk gap project is part of the city’s 2022-27 capital improvements plan. The project includes construction of sidewalk on the west side of Newport Road from Downup Circle to Sunset Road, and on the north side of Sunset Road to Brooks Street.

Once finished, the new sidewalks will make it easier for pedestrians to get to the Newport Road access point for Bird Hills Nature Area.

The project utilizes federal funding from the Surface Transportation Program to offset the local cost of the project, officials said.

Voters in November 2020 approved a new sidewalk construction millage, which will help fill sidewalk gaps and provide a funding source specifically for this work in Ann Arbor. The tax is expected to raise about $1.3 million annually and cost $20 per year for the homeowner with a $200,000 market value and $100,000 taxable value.

However, because revenue from the new dedicated sidewalk millage is not available until July 1, the cost to complete the design work and bid the project is being interim financed from the street, bridge, and sidewalk millage fund.

Once the revenue from the new millage is available, the millage fund will be reimbursed using funds from the new sidewalk construction millage, officials said.

As of early 2020, there were 145 miles of missing sidewalks on city streets.
