The heat of spring is in full force for the final day of April, with plenty of sunshine around much of the state and temperatures quickly soaring towards the 80 degree mark, something Wyoming hasn’t seen since the fall months. The weather as of now is begging Wyomingites to get outside to enjoy it, whether that be by fishing or simply taking one’s dog to the park for a few hours. Today will be (for the most part) the last day to really get outside, as rain chances begin to return tomorrow, though in scattered fashion.
May 1st will still be a warm day, and for a couple of locations slightly warmer than this afternoon. For most however it will be a few degrees cooler ahead of the next system on its way to Wyoming. Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are possible beginning Saturday afternoon, with most of them expected to be in the central and eastern parts of the state. The wind will begin to shift direction overnight on Saturday into Sunday as the next system grips the Cowboy State on Sunday, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms. The good news here is temperatures on Sunday are likely to be too cold for any kind of severe weather as highs hang in the 50s. Things will cool off even further into Monday as the jet stream over the western US continues to dip and the northerly wind continues to pull in arctic air.
For Monday thunder will be hard to come by as a result of cooler conditions. High temperatures will likely be in the 40s and lower 50s with higher elevations seeing highs back in the upper 30s, meaning that while places like Cheyenne and Casper see rain on Monday, Laramie will be seeing snow. This will be a very wet and heavy snow and accumulations will be limited by the warmth of this weekend, however I-80 through the summit and streets in places like Laramie could still be a bit slick when the main rainfall ends overnight Monday.
Tuesday and Wednesday of next week will begin to see temperatures climb once more, bringing back the possibilities for scattered thunderstorms during the afternoon hours along with rain showers. Highs for Tuesday will be back into the mid and upper 50s, and for Wednesday back into the 60s. Wednesday could potentially be a day to watch for limited severe weather, such as some small hail or gusty winds. Things will likely still be too cold to be concerned with a tornado threat.
All of these rain chances over the next several days will continue to help with drought relief in Wyoming, with everything through 6:00 am Tuesday (and the storm from this past Tuesday) being factored into the Drought Monitor that will be released Thursday at 6:30 am MDT. Rain chances look to fade out after Wednesday, but temperatures are expected to continue to climb into the second weekend of May.
