"It's been going on years and years," Hernández said, noting that speaking up about it before could have affected other performance opportunities on 39th Street.
Lance Rodman, who spoke at the rally, said he was there to stand in solidarity with transgender, Black and brown entertainers with similar — or worse — stories.
"I'm also here specifically as a victim of sexual abuse … In a community that is supposed to be about empowerment, inclusivity, and protection, consent is consent,” Rodman, who performs under the stage name Lana Love, told demonstrators before the march.
"It's important to note that it's not just (complaints) from entertainers, it's from people who are also patrons of the bar,” he said.
Protesters met at NW 39th and Barnes, where they cheered, chanted and waved flags along the street corner before marching to The Boom nightclub. Once there, the crowd continued to shout demands as bar patrons sipped drinks and listened to country music on the back patio.
Organizers said their group soon expects to form a new lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender alliance in response to their experiences on 39th Street and encouraged community members to get involved. The rally follows months of protests calling for equality and justice across the nation, including several in the OKC metro.
“If a great deal of people are coming forward and saying, ‘Hey, let’s listen,’ you might want to listen,” Barajas said.
Operators of The Boom did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
