ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) - Indiana voters can't go to the ballot box in two Georgia runoff elections for seats in the United States Senate.

But the outcomes can have a major impact on people living in the Hoosier state.

Control of the Senate rides on the results.

Republican Senator David Perdue is locked in a tight battle with Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff.

Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler is also trying to fend off a ferocious challenge from her Democrat opponent, Atlanta pastor Raphael Warnock.

Victories by the Democrats would create a 50/50 split in the Senate.

Under such a scenario, Democratic Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would cast the deciding vote to break ties in the Senate.

Democrats could be calling the shots in the Senate and in the U.S. House of Representatives and White House, if they can win both Georgia Senate races.

Any political party strives to be in charge of the executive and legislative branches at the same time, making it much easier to set the agenda for establishing policy and for getting spending initiatives approved.

Republicans had that exclusive control for two years right after Donald Trump was elected president in 2016.

But the leaders of Allen County's Republican and Democratic Parties hope Georgia voters consider what's at stake before making their choices in the two Senate races.

"Let's be real, they have the power to affect the entire trajectory of our country, just with two senate races in their state alone. I know a lot of people here have been volunteering, you know, writing letters, sending postcards, sending texts. They're doing all those things trying to help, so a lot of people have eyes on Georgia," said local Democratic Party chairperson Misti Meehan.

"I think people have to decide whether they want Lindsey Graham or Bernie Sanders to write the next budget for the United States. It's clearly a fork in the road, which will determine the manner in which this country operates," said Allen County GOP Chairman Steve Shine.

Purdue Fort Wayne Political Science Professor Dr. Michael Wolf said Indiana's two Republican U.S. Senators-- Todd Young and Mike Braun-- would lose committee and sub-committee chairmanships if Democrats took over control of the Senate.

The switch in power could also aid Democratic President-elect Joe Biden in efforts to add justices to the U.S. Supreme Court if Biden decides to pursue such a change to the makeup of the high court.
