2020 racked up a massive laundry list of disasters and tragedies, including (but certainly not limited to) the coronavirus outbreak, murder hornets, and Taylor Swift’s obscene highjacking of lumberjack culture.
Now one can add “The Great Bucatini Shortage” to the list.
According to Rachel Handler of Grub Street, this dwindling supply of those thick noodles with “little holes” (the rough translation of “bucatini”) first arose in March. While Handler and her boyfriend were still able to find staple pastas such as spaghetti in a pandemic-shortened supply, nary a package of De Cecco bucatini could be spotted. It soon became apparent that other New Yorkers were experiencing the same issue.
In fact, she discovered that the bucatini shortage wasn’t just limited to New York grocery stores at all. Her mother, who lives in Chicago, brought up the Windy City’s own lack of supply, hinting at a larger crisis.
So, what the fusilli was going on?
Well, upon further investigation, Handler stumbled upon a monkey barrel’s worth of conspiracy theories, including one that deduced people were using bucatini straws instead of plastic in an effort to be greener.
While fun, the real reason behind the disappearance of bucatini has nothing to do the environment at all. Rather, bucatini was put on “import alert” by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because it fell below the organization’s iron level requirements.
At least, this is what “Big Pasta” tells her. Handler believes something else is afoot (which she highlights in her absolutely-beyond-worth-the-read article). International intrigue may even be at play.
Seriously—read her article to find out the truth behind the bucatini shortage. And feel free to whip up some amatriciana while you’re at it.
