Multiple people died Monday after a small plane crashed along the State Highway 360 service road in Grand Prairie, authorities said.
Grand Prairie Fire Chief Robert Fite said the department responded shortly before 3 p.m. to a Sonic parking lot along the service road of State Highway 360 near East Mayfield Road.
A fire caused by the plane crash was quickly put out by the department, Fite said. The cause of the accident is not yet known, but Fite said witnesses told police that the plane hit a telephone pole and was in “obvious distress” as it came down.
There were multiple victims, Fite said, but he could not confirm the number of people killed.
The plane took off from Grand Prairie Municipal Airport at 2:45 p.m. and crashed approximately five minutes later, Fite said.
As it came down, the plane hit a truck with a lone driver who was traveling along the service road, Fite said. The driver had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, he said.
The Grand Prairie Fire Department tweeted Monday that the department was responding to the crash about 3:20 p.m. and to avoid the area. The department described the aircraft as a two-passenger plane.
GPFD has responded to a two-passenger plane crash near Highway 360 and Mayfield Rd. Details to follow. Please avoid the area.
