I walk and bike on both sides of our river levee. I appreciate that we have these miles of accessible trails. I see the care various agencies give promoting the health of the river and its banks. I enjoy the informative sign posts highlighting natural features, plants and animals.
But the amount of trash is distressing. Piles are adjacent to various encampments. This seems to advertise that we see these unmanaged mounds as acceptable parts of this protected area. This discourages families and visitors from enjoying this resource. I understand there are complexities in dealing with the campsites. I regularly see Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation workers maintaining the trash receptacles along the walkways. I appreciate the supervised teams walking the levee and picking up individual pieces of trash. But these efforts appear not to deal with the larger piles. Aren’t there some funds for regularly picking up all this trash?
