PEORIA (WEEK) -- Keeping their annual tradition alive, Charter Oak Primary School's Christmas Sing-Along took on a new look. The school capped off their virtual semester with a drive-in show for students and their families.
Charter Oak principal Kathy Rodriguez wanted everyone to breathe a sigh of relief with holiday spirit in the air.
"These families mean so much to us," said Rodriguez, who is in her third year as principal. "We all needed this. It's a heartwarming time for all of us. You can just feel it in the air."
The staff bought in to the new format. The packed parking lot were treated to holiday gifts including books and notebooks, songs led by the music department, and some impromptu dance moves.
Families greatly appreciated the effort put into the event to cap off a years that's had its ups and downs.
"I almost can't talk about it without crying," said Casey Collins, mother of a Charter Oak student. "I feel like it's just as festive as it would've been in-person. They've done a great job keeping it happy and upbeat this whole time."
"They're able to get out of the house and have something to do just besides school all day long so we like it," said Janice Moore, whose son is a Charter Oak kindergartener.
Along with keeping the tradition alive, seeing students in-person brings smiles to the teachers' faces.
"I don't think we would've stopped at anything to bring this type of event just so we see each other, celebrate together, have some joy together to close out this year," said Rodriguez.
