John Calipari was pleased with his team’s fight in the second half. They simply dug a hole too deep to get out of in the final 20 minutes. They got into that mess with a terrible run of defense in the first half and John Calipari rests some of the blame on one unnamed player’s shoulders.

“We have a couple guys that are not playing where they need to play — fight, competitive spirit, come up with balls, toughness, rebounding and what happened in the first half, we had a guy that broke off the gameplan,” Calipari said.

“We spent a couple days on it because we had time. He walked in the game, ran the wrong way, ran the wrong way, ran the wrong way and they got 12 points. Then all of a sudden the rim is like an ocean. It’s what happened with us at Georgia Tech. All I said at halftime is let’s win the second half. Let’s just worry about winning the second half.”

That early run crippled the Cats. Calipari couldn’t believe it.

“Like what in the hell was going on? That’s why I grabbed my face. I couldn’t believe it.”

There was only one thing Cal could do in the second half. He shrunk the lineup and only played those who were willing to fight and follow the script.

“We had breakdowns. We had guys that didn’t follow the script, never had followed the script. So, all of a sudden there’s open three, open three, open three. WHAT IN THE WORLD?!?! And so in the second half we played the guys that were playing the script. I took some guys out. We made a little run and they believed.”

So who is Calipari talking about? It does not take trained eye to see that Cam’Ron Fletcher only played four minutes, all in the first half when Notre Dame made the run that gave them a double digit lead. Calipari is not giving up on Fletcher, but there is no time to waste. If players aren’t doing what they’re supposed to, it’s next man up.

“You got to dig your heels in or someone else plays,” Calipari said. “Dig your heels in or someone else plays.”
