Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he and other Republicans cannot follow President Trump “blindly” unless he produces evidence to support his claims of voter fraud in the election.
He noted that it was a “contentious election” that left some Republicans unsure how to react.
“That’s why to me it was so important to say early on to the president: If your base is for not conceding [because] there was voter fraud, then show us,” he said on ABC News’ “This Week.” “Because if you don’t show us, we can’t do this. We can’t back you blindly without evidence.”
Christie said he has been a friend of Trump’s for 20 years, but “friendship doesn’t mean that you’re blind.”
“Friendship means that you will listen to somebody, give them their opportunity and if they don’t come forward with the proof, then it’s time to move on,” he said.
Trump has not conceded to President-elect Joe Biden after votes in Pennsylvania put him over the top on Saturday, and has continued to claim without proof that voter fraud — especially the use of mail-in ballots — tipped the scales to the former vice president.
His campaign has filed a flurry of lawsuits in states to contest the results.
