Brodie Van Wagenen's roughly two-year tenure as GM of the Mets is over.
Van Wagenen is leaving the organization, Mets president Sandy Alderson announced on Friday soon after the sale to new owner Steve Cohen was finalized.
Along with Van Wagenen, Omar Minaya, Allard Baird, Adam Guttridge, and Jared Banner are also leaving the Mets.
During his two seasons at the helm, Van Wagenen's Mets finished 86-76 in 2019 and 26-34 in 2020 during the shortened 60-game season -- tied with the Washington Nationals for last place in the NL East.
Van Wagenen's future with the Mets became an open question toward the end of last season, with the pending arrival of Steve Cohen as owner and Cohen's hiring of Sandy Alderson as team president changing the organizational dynamic.
Cohen was approved by MLB owners on Oct. 30.
Speaking on Sept. 18, Van Wagenen -- who was under contract through the 2022 season -- said he had not yet had conversations with Cohen about his future.
Van Wagenen, 46, was hired on Oct. 29, 2018 after working as an agent as the co-head of CAA Sports' baseball division.
During his first offseason as GM, Van Wagenen included top prospect Jarred Kelenic in the trade that brought Edwin Diaz and Robinson Cano from the Seattle Mariners on Dec. 3, 2019 in what was one of his most controversial moves.
Later that offseason, Van Wagenen swung a trade with the Houston Astros for J.D. Davis, signed Jed Lowrie to what turned out to be a disastrous two-year deal, and also made his now infamous "come and get us" quote that dared the rest of the NL East to take on the Mets.
Then in late-March of 2019, Van Wagenen inked Jacob deGrom to a five-year extension worth $137.5 million, capping off what was a topsy-turvy negotiating process.
While the "come and get us" quote initially came back to bite Van Wagenen, who said in July of 2019 that the division had indeed come and gotten the Mets, the team turned its season around and nearly made the playoffs.
The above turnaround coincided with the Mets trading pitching prospects Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson to the Toronto Blue Jays for Marcus Stroman, though Van Wagenen said the deal was made with an eye on 2020. Unfortunately for the Mets, Stroman opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns.
Two of Van Wagenen's biggest signings heading into the 2020 season were Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha, whose combined struggles were one of the main reasons why the Mets underachieved so badly in 2020.
While a bunch of Van Wagenen's free agent signings and trades were misses, the Mets employed an aggressive drafting strategy under his regime that netted them impressive hauls in both the 2019 and 2020 drafts. It's those players, including pitchers Matt Allan and J.T. Ginn, who could ultimately help further define Van Wagenen's Mets legacy.
