The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado spun off from Tropical Storm caused widespread damage in an area extending from Dover to Middletown.
The tornado, which traveled 29-miles was one of six reported in the region and the only twister reported in Delaware.
The Weather Service reported that the twister shattered the record for a tornado traveling the longest distance in Delaware. The previous record-setter was a tornado that traveled 13 miles in New Castle County.
Delmarva WX reported the storm moved from south to north, knocking down trees, blowing off sections of roofs, and in one case taking out a corner of a house.
The tornado is believed to have lost strength in the Glasgow area, which also reported damage to homes. The remnants might have later moved into Cecil County, MD, WX reported.The tornado, in all likelihood, played a key role in massive electrical outages endured by Delmarva Power and Dover Electric Department customers. A crew numbering 800 worked to restore power for Delmarva customers.
There were reports of tornadoes in multiple Delaware on Tuesday morning as Tropical Storm Isaias moved through the state.
Northern New Castle County saw flooding that led to multiple water rescues and the evacuation of a Newark motel.
One death was attributed to the tropical storm. A Milford woman died from a falling tree limb as she was inspecting her property after the storm, Delaware State Police reported.
A Delaware Emergency Management Agency spokesman said assessments are still underway, adding that it is too early to come up with a dollar estimate. DEMA Director A.J. Schall earlier told the News Journal the dollar figure could be $20 million.
