Do we really want to build
high-density after COVID?

Some scientific evidence indicates the hardest hit areas with coronavirus are in some cases those with the densest populations. In some areas, mass transit and high-density housing are common denominators.

We’re not done with COVID-19 just yet. Even if we find a flu-like vaccine that may help, there will be another virus someday, followed by others. Do we really want to continue building high-density housing along the El Camino Real corridor, creating the same kind of cramped environment that has seen such a rapid rise in the spread of this virus?

Let’s take a step back from the onslaught of mass housing and transit that municipalities and counties are advocating throughout the Bay Area. Companies have discovered the benefits of remote work. Perhaps we could continue to encourage working from home, thus reducing the amount of traffic and preserving the relaxed attitudes that have arisen from more time spent with our loved ones.
