Georgetown City Council approved three changes to speed zones May 26 based on the findings from a Texas Department of Transportation study.
TXDOT reviews speed zones along state highways to see if changes need to be made to existing zones, staff documents said. The last time TxDOT did a study along Hwy. 29 from the west city limits to the eastern city limits was 2008. One reason for reviewing the zones was changes along the highway, such as residential and commercial growth.
Based on the recent speed study, TxDOT recommended the following changes to Hwy. 29.
- West of River Terrace Drive to Wood Court: Currently 65 miles per hours, changing to 60 miles per hour
- D.B. Wood Road to Wolf Lake Drive: Currently 50 and 55 miles per hour, changing to 45 miles per hour
- Just east of Hutto Road to Southwestern: Currently 50 miles per hour, changing to 40 miles per hour
There is no financial impact to the city, as TxDOT will be responsible for installing the new speed zone signs along Hwy. 29 and University Avenue. The signs are expected to be in place within a few weeks.
