The 2022 U.S. Classic begins today in Salt Lake City, Utah, serving as the final qualifier to this year’s U.S. national championships for WAG athletes, while MAG competitors are taking part for the first time.
Below, you can find everything you’ll need to follow the competition over the next few days, including who’s competing and how you can watch.
Who To Watch?
The senior field is pretty narrow this year, as most athletes have already qualified to nationals while some just recently competed at the Pan American Championships, but there’s still enough to be excited about, including the return of 2020 Olympic alternate and 2021 world medalist Leanne Wong, who is back in elite following a great start to her NCAA career at Florida.
Her biggest competition should be Shilese Jones, who most recently earned a couple of medals at the City of Jesolo Trophy, but the rest of the field is a bit of a question mark, especially after Kayla DiCello, Konnor McClain, and Katelyn Jong all withdrew. There are a few on the list I think could end up challenging for a podium spot, but all of these options have been pretty hit-or-miss this season, and while a 51-52 all-around score is possible, so is a 48-49.
My favorites to step it up here are probably Addison Fatta, Levi Jung-Ruivivar, Charlotte Booth, and Nola Matthews, and of course there’s Joscelyn Roberson as well, but she’ll need to be at a hundred percent on vault, beam, and floor, since bars is still a bit of an enemy.
The junior field is pretty massive, even without some of the Pan Ams competitors in play. Like the seniors, there are a bunch who are capable of huge scores sometimes but have also bombed meets. It’s not like the old days when the U.S. had top juniors so far ahead of the rest of the field that a fall didn’t matter – falls and even mistakes here will matter, and the podium will end up super close.
Madray Johnson is probably the biggest title threat, and we’ll see Audrey Snyder back in action shortly after her international debut at Pan Ams. I’m also keeping my eye on newcomers like Keiryn Finnell, Jayla Hang, Annalisa Milton, Claire Pease, Simone Rose, and Kelise Woolford. Some of these won’t exactly be podium contenders, but I enjoy watching them and am looking forward to seeing how they do here.
About a million guys are competing here, including 2020 Olympians Yul Moldauer, Shane Wiskus, and Brody Malone, along with 2021 world pommel horse champion Stephen Nedoroscik. We’ll also see Fred Richard, who just won the all-around, floor, rings, and vault titles at Pan Ams, making his senior debut here, and I’m personally excited for Donnell Whittenburg, Khoi Young, Ian Lasic-Ellis, Paul Juda, Riley Loos, Cameron Bock, Taylor Burkhart, and a ton of others.

How Can We Watch?
The first junior WAG session and the second MAG session will be available on FlipNow, while the second junior WAG session, the senior WAG session, and the first MAG session will be broadcast live on CNBC. I haven’t found a way to stream these sessions.
