The Buccaneers have done very well with their free agent signings during the offseason, but they certainly don’t need to stop where they’re at.
Strike while the iron’s hot. That is exactly what the Buccaneers need to do in the free agent market after doing well with the Kyle Rudolph signing.
Tight end was the biggest area of need for Tampa and their hopes for reaching another Super Bowl, but the need has shifted.
Good teams never stop getting better and looking for the best fit on the open market, and this should lead to the Buccaneers going after one or two more notable free agents around the start of training camp.
One of these players needs to at least be an edge.
The Bucs currently have three decent-looking edges to lean on during the season, but the unit is still without great depth and is a little young. Any injuries to Shaquil Barrett will leave this room without almost all of its experience, and that can’t happen for a team with aspirations like Tampa’s.
The Bucs need a veteran to pair with their other newcomer in Akiem Hicks, and the best fit as it stands looks like Carlos Dunlap.
Dunlap is coming off a very productive season in a depth role for the Seahawks and would be an immediate improvement over the current depth in Tampa.
The veteran end has been extremely healthy during the later stages of his career and is able to make the most of depth roles when called to do so. What more could the Bucs be looking for?
There aren’t a ton of options out there that would immediately gel with the defense and bring the same level of intensity without being too expensive, and the Bucs would be wise to acknowledge that a need still exists on their line.
As much as Todd Bowles takes his front seven seriously, it would be a mistake to reach camp and go through the preseason without a plan in place to keep one of the most important positions on the defense adequately-staffed.
We all saw how injuries could derail a season when they happened at the wrong position last season. The Bucs can’t afford to let that happen again. They need to look into Carlos Dunlap.
