GRAND HAVEN, MI -- It was a calm and cold Sunday afternoon at Grand Haven State Park. From afar the noise of crackling could be heard.
On closer inspection, the thin ice layer on Lake Michigan was colliding with the shoreline causing ice shards to form.
For over 30 minutes the thin, frozen layer of ice piled up along the shoreline.
In this MLive video, you can hear the noise of the ice cracking, stacking and piling up. MLive also launched a drone to capture the action from above along the treacherous mounds of ice that have formed along the beach at the state park. The sheets of ice were about quarter-inch thick and ranged in sizes from a few inches to two-feet-plus long.

Lake Michigan is truly turning into a winter wonderland with the ice shelf stretching further and further into the lake each day. A variety of different formations have formed, including some little caves and ice volcanos. On Sunday, the Grand Haven pier was closed for safety concerns with a large amount of snow and ice covering the pier.
Extreme caution is needed when going onto the ice shelves. With fluctuating temperatures, the ice is constantly changing and as officials have stated over the years, “No ice is safe ice.”
Below are some of the photos captured of the otherworldly landscape along the shore of Lake Michigan.
