TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - One DEA agent was killed while another was injured along with an officer from the Tucson Police Department in a shooting at the Amtrak train station in the downtown area early Monday, Oct. 4.
Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus said the shooting suspect was found dead on the train and a second suspect was taken into custody.
Magnus said it started around 8 a.m. when the Counter Narcotics Alliance boarded the train to do a routine check for money, drugs and firearms.
He said CNA made contact with two individuals on the second level of the double-decker train. One suspect was taken into custody while the second, a Hispanic male in his 20s or 30s, pulled out a handgun and started shooting.
Magnus said a DEA agent was shot and died. A second agent was also shot and taken to Banner UMC in critical condition.
“I am deeply saddened to confirm that one special agent died as a result of injuries sustained during the shooting; a second DEA special agent is in critical condition; and a task force officer is in stable condition,” said Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Division Cheri Oz. “Thank you for keeping the DEA in your thoughts and prayers.”
A TPD officer was also injured in the shooting after rushing to the train to help when he heard the shots. Magnus said the officer is in stable condition and is expected to survive.
The suspect was later found dead after barricading himself in a bathroom on the train. Magnus did not know if the suspect was shot by agents or if he took his own life.
Tucson Mayor Regina Romero ordered flags at all city facilities to be lowered to half-staff for the agents and officer.
Gov. Doug Ducey also said in statement later that day he sent his condolences to the loved ones and colleagues of the agent who was killed and sent his prayers to the loved ones and colleagues of the two officers who were shot.
An eyewitness told KOLD News 13 that two men approached another man on the train and said they wanted to talk to him. All three got off the train and that is when shots were fired.
According to the Associated Press, the train was traveling from Los Angeles to New Orleans and arrived in Tucson at 7:40 a.m.
The train, Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle Train 2/422, is being held in Tucson for the investigation. It was supposed to leave for Benson and Del Rio, Texas. Amtrak said riders can 1-800-USA-RAIL for assistance.
Evan Courtney tweeted out a photo from the scene that shows two law enforcement officers hugging.
KOLD’s Dan Marries was on the scene when one person was taken into custody. No word yet if that person is the second suspect from the shooting.
The TPD is asking residents to avoid Toole from North Fourth Avenue to North Sixth.
Marries said the Ronstadt Center, located near the train station, was evacuated and shut down earlier in the morning. He said at least 84 Amtrak passengers were loaded onto buses at the Ronstadt.
Sun Link said the streetcar “is temporarily unable to reach Downtown and Mercado stops. Service is still available for 4th Ave, University, 2nd St & Helen stations.”
City High School, which is located near the scene at 47 East Pennington Street, was locked down but it was lifted by 9:45 a.m.
