It’s not a good day for a dip in the Gulf.
The National Weather Service in Mobile has raised the rip current risk today from moderate to high, which means the water will be unsafe for all levels of swimmers.
The high rip current risk is expect to last thought tonight and then drop to moderate on Thursday.
Areas along the coast are flying red flags today to warn beachgoers of rough surf:
The areas at high risk for rip currents include all of Alabama’s coastal areas as well as the beaches of northwest Florida.
If you get caught in a rip current try to not panic. Call for help first. If you have to swim out of the rip then paddle parallel to the shoreline until you feel the current ease off -- but don’t try to swim against the rip current. You will not win that battle and instead tire yourself out.
The rip current risk is forecast to drop to low on Friday.
