Work is likely to start in August for a project that will aim to decrease flooding along South 180th Street in SeaTac.

Last year, The King County Flood Control District awarded grant money to the City of SeaTac to study the solutions for this area’s flooding issues. A $125,000 grant check from King County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove was presented to SeaTac.

Fast forward to this year, Road Construction Northwest Inc was awarded the project by the City of SeaTac at the Council Meeting on July 13. Road Construction Northwest offered the lowest bid for this much-need project. Northwest Construction’s big was $50,523 more than engineer expectations.

The project intends to relieve longstanding flooding issues on South 180th Street near the Hunt Club Apartment Complex. Flooding is caused by a ditch on private property with inadequate capacity to convey flows resulting in flooding several times a year.

The project will include:

  • adjusting culvert and pipe alignments
  • re-grading a low-flow portion of the stream/channel
  • and a 5-foot walkaway to connect South 180th Street to South 182nd Street

The included lighted pedestrian path will make it easier for anyone walking from the area. This location is a designated safe route to the nearby Bow Lake Elementary.
