A total of four Nebraska volleyball alumni are competing in the Tokyo Olympics. Jordan Larson, Kelsey Robinson and Justine Wong-Orantes make up one-quarter of the United States team, while Sarah Pavan will compete for Canada in beach volleyball. All four Huskers have an excellent chance to earn a medal and are arguably the gold medal favorites in their respective sport.
On the court, Team USA enters the Olympics with a No. 1 world ranking, and the Americans have won the last three FIVB Volleyball Nations League Championships. The Americans have won a medal in each of the last three Olympics, although the United States has never won a gold medal in women's volleyball. Larson is competing in her third Olympics after helping Team USA to a silver medal in 2012 and a bronze medal in 2016. Robinson was also a member of the bronze-medal winning team in 2016, while Wong-Orantes is making her Olympic debut in Tokyo.
On the beach, Pavan and her partner Melissa Humana-Paredes are the reigning world champions and are the No. 1-ranked pair in the world. Pavan is competing in her second consecutive Olympic Games, as she finished fifth at the 2016 Olympics while playing with a different partner.
Nebraska Associate Head Coach Tyler Hildebrand is also involved with the Tokyo Olympics. Hildebrand returned to the Husker coaching staff last year after serving as the USA Volleyball Beach National Team Director of Coaching until last summer.
