A man who exited his vehicle and was struck by a car as he walked along Illinois Route 120 near Wauconda has died from his injuries, the Lake County sheriff’s office said Monday.

The man, a 34-year-old Grayslake resident, died Sunday night. He had initially been brought to Good Samaritan Hospital, but had been airlifted to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge after the late Saturday night accident.

The man’s identity has not yet been released by authorities.

The sheriff’s office said the man got out his vehicle at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday west of the Fisher Road intersection with Route 120 in Wauconda Township, and began walking along the highway shoulder. He then walked into the westbound lane, where he was struck by a passing vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said Monday it still had not determined why the man walked into the road. Officials said they are attempting to determine whether impairment played a role.

The other motorist was a 30-year-old Round Lake-area man, police said. The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s technical crash team.
