Will The Weeknd's cult follow him to HBO's 'The Idol' for acting debut? - New York Post

Well, The Weeknd already has that whole “get people to follow me despite odd behavior” thing down pat — so perhaps dabbling in idol worship might not be so far-fetched.

With his infamous bloodied face and “plastic surgery” bandages troll act now a think of the past, the 31-year-old singer born Abel Tesfaye is going full cult boogie with his next project.

The singer of “Blinding Lights” has set his sights on TV stardom: The Weekend will make his acting debut in HBO’s “The Idol,” a new “cult drama” series in development from Sam Levinson, creator of the controversial hit “Euphoria” starring Emmy winner Zendaya, Deadline reported.

The singer-songwriter and noted anti-Grammy Awards activist is not only set to star — he’s also booked to co-write scripts and executive produce the show revolving around a female pop singer who falls for an enigmatic LA club owner who also happens to be the leader of a secret cult.

Levinson reportedly co-created the series with The Weeknd and Reza Fahim, a former nightlife entrepreneur-turned-writer who is also the infamous anti-Grammy Awards activist’s producing partner.

Reps for The Weeknd did not immediately return The Post’s request for comment about his new project.

The artist made international headlines in March by fueling the flames of war with the Recording Academy — ignited when the music institute failed to grant Grammys 2021 nominations respect for his “After Hours” album. He vowed to never again attend the awards show.

“Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” the “Save Your Tears” singer said in a statement at the time. He teased his growing discontent in a tweet several months before: “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…” the Canada-born crooner complained in November.

However, it appears the Super Bowl LV halftime headliner has found something else to focus his creative energy on at this point. “The Idol” is set to be written and co-executive-produced by Mary Laws, who has successfully scripted “Succession” and “Preacher.” The Weeknd’s manager Wassim “SAL” Slaiby and creative director La Mar C. Taylor are also set to co-exec produce.

His latest move isn’t so far-fetched: The Weeknd does have a little acting experience under his belt beyond his dozens of music videos. In 2020, he wrote and guest starred in an episode of the TBS animated sitcom “American Dad.” The same year, he also played himself in Adam Sandler’s acclaimed Safdie brothers film “Uncut Gems.”

And then we have his long run in the performance art piece about a top pop star who stoked mass curiosity by sporting bandages for months while pretending he had plastic surgery.
