LOGAN SQUARE — Plans to open a cannabis farm or dispensary in a building along the Chicago River in Logan Square inched forward Thursday, but the project is still a long way from reality.
The city’s Plan Commission on Thursday unanimously approved the project, which would bring a cannabis business to a four-story building at 2017 N. Mendell St. in the North Branch Industrial Corridor.
The applicant, 2017 Baker Mendell, LLC, an entity managed by Chicago-based developer Warren Baker, is planning for the future, according to the applicant’s zoning attorney Michael Ezgur. Baker’s group is in talks with a tenant that is working on getting its cannabis license from the state.
Any tenant looking to open a cannabis farm or dispensary in the building would still need special use permit approval from the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals. The zoning change ordinance must then be approved by the city’s Zoning Committee and the full City Council.
“There’s a whole series of processes to make this a reality, but this is one of the steps along the way,” Teresa Córdova, chairwoman of the Chicago Plan Commission, said at Thursday’s virtual meeting.
Baker’s group has done some renovations to the inside of the building, but is looking to do more to the tune of $20 million, Ezgur said. Plans do not call for any changes to the exterior of the building, the attorney added.
The site is located in 2nd Ward Ald. Brian Hopkins’ ward. The alderman issued a letter of support, as did the neighborhood groups in the area, according to Ezgur.
Baker didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the project.
