Coral snake spotted along popular trail in Memorial Park - Chron

When Memorial Park visitor Christian Seehausen ventured into the Inner Loop, he stumbled on a rare coral snake on Monday afternoon. In a Reddit post yesterday, Seehausen gave Houstonians a warning:

"This was just a foot or two off the trail, right next to a bench on the Inner Loop trail near the Nature Center. My understanding is that these guys are pretty docile and probably won't bite unless you touch them/scare them," Seehausen wrote on Reddit. "But still, be careful out there, and never mess around with one."

You really don't want to mess around with coral snakes, because their bites are venomous and potentially deadly.

"Coral snakes, which are venomous, do not have cat-eyes," Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials state. "They are the only venomous snake in Texas that is brightly colored red, yellow, and black bands completely encircling the body."

But, luckily for us Texans, according to TPWD, coral snakes are typically shy and not often spotted.  Only 15 of the 105 snake species found in Texas are potentially dangerous to humans.

Although Texans might spot snakes more in the springtime with warmer temperatures, you can also spot them in the fall. There's a special distinction to remember if you spot a Texas snake and want to know if it's venomous.

"A good memory-jogging device to learn is "Red next to black is O.K. for Jack, red next to yellow will kill a fellow," TPWD officials explain.

According to LiveScience's Jessie Szalay, coral snakes are known to be nocturnal and reclusive. If you are ever bitten by a coral snake, the bites can be "extremely painful and if left untreated, can lead to cardiac arrest," according to LiveScience.

"Humans are mostly bitten when trying to pick up a coral snake. Because of their small size, these snakes don't carry much venom in their fangs, so they may try to hold onto their victim for some time," Szalay wrote.

But coral snake venom is highly toxic, so avoid them at all costs.
