Douglas County Solid Waste has been awarded grant funding to clean up active and abandoned homeless camps and decided some locations were in urgent need even prior to the funding becoming available. Solid Waste, along with help from Eastmont Metro Park Department, recently cleaned 10 homeless encampments along the Douglas County perimeter of the Apple Capitol Loop Trail.

“We’re going to be getting some grant funding to clean up some of the homeless camps we have currently,” said Becci Piepel, director of solid waste. “We went and looked at all of the areas to see what was out there and saw that were some we could clean up right away.”

During the clean up process, 75 sleeping bags were found along with drug pipes, needles, a shopping cart and other various collected debris.

“In total there was over 1,800 pounds of garbage collected. We found some crack pipes, we found marijuana pipes,” said Piepel. “At one of the camps we found multiple knives and a machete not even 20 feet from the Loop Trail.”

Douglas County Solid Waste was awarded $45,000 from the Local Solid Waste Financial Assistance Grant.

“We are going to be out with these grant funds cleaning up. We’re going to start with cleaning up a lot of the garbage on the riverbanks and along the Loop Trail and abandoned camps,” said Piepel. “After that, then we are going to start on the active homeless camps that we have along the Douglas County Loop Trail and riverbanks.”
