SOUTH HAVEN, MI -- Lake Michigan is thawing, which means spring is in the not to distant future.
MLive photographer Joel Bissell was out on the Lake Michigan lakeshore in Van Buren County Tuesday, March 1, for a closer look at the melting lake ice. From the view of a drone high above South Haven’s South Beach and nearby Van Buren State Park, the ice shelf can be seen cracking and breaking apart.
The ice shelves that people were climbing on just a few weeks ago are now impossible to get to, with ice thinning and open water appearing between the beach and the ice, about 30 yards from shore.
Thousands of ice pancakes floated in open water beyond the ice shelves. Heavy snow and ice still covered sections of the pier in South Haven, even obscuring the view of the lighthouse in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service the ice coverage topped at 37% this year. As of March 1, the ice coverage on Lake Michigan has dropped just below 20%. The average peak ice on the Great Lake is 28%.
Lake Michigan typically will be nearly ice free by the end of March or the beginning of April, depending on the weather.
Extreme caution is needed when going onto the ice shelves. With fluctuating temperatures, the ice is constantly changing and as officials have repeatedly stated over the years, “No ice is safe ice.”
