The Chiefs and Eagles are set to match up in Week 4, and although both teams have a similar record, they’re heading in different directions.
Kansas City simply needs to correct a few mistakes on offense, while Philadelphia is in the midst of an urgent identity crisis.
With both teams badly needing a win, here are seven storylines to follow on Sunday.
1. Steven Nelson matches up with team that drafted him
Nelson was drafted in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, quietly making a name for himself before moving on to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Nelson is very familiar with the Chiefs’ offense, practicing against players like Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce early on in his career. This week he talked about the matchup and reuniting.
“Definitely, man. Me and my old teammates who have gone and retired now, we talk about it today,” Nelson told reporters. “Like how he used to shred us on the first-team defense and the stuff he was doing, was just like crazy you know what I mean. We always knew he had talent.”
2. Andy Reid once fired Nick Sirianni
During his Week 4 press conference, Sirianni reminisced about the time Reid fired him as wide receivers coach in Kansas City upon arriving from Philadelphia.
“As far as – yeah, I just know what type of coach he is, a really good coach. And I always say guys that I think are really good coaches are, you know – that his team plays with fundamentals and puts them in good positions to win. He’s a good scheme coach.
3. Rodney McLeod makes his season debut
The Eagles captain and strong safety is back, providing the Birds with a veteran presence and core leadership.
“It’s huge. He’s shown every single day, whether he was going to be – whether he was not practicing at all or whether he was out there practicing, or whether he was getting ready to play in a game, he’s shown to be the same person every single day. And he’s shown to be the same leader every single day. And that’s just huge.
That’s huge to have that veteran leadership out there. And so, really excited that he’s going to get back out there and be able to contribute in this game.
And because, you know, we need those guys out in the field that have that type of leadership that Rodney has. So really excited to have him back.”
4. Chiefs reeling after mistake field loss
The Chiefs come into Philly angry about two straight losses — a one-point loss to the Ravens in Week 2 and then a loss to the Chargers on a game-winning touchdown pass from Justin Herbert. The Chiefs are averaging 413 yards and 30.7 points per game, so the 1-2 isn’t that concerning.
5. Miles Sanders needs the work
One of the more talented running backs in the NFL, Sanders is coming off an outing in which he only logged two carries, with one gaining 24-yards.
With the Eagles needing to slow down the Chiefs vaunted offense, Nick Sirianni will be expected to lean on the former Penn State star.
7. Kenneth Gainwell watch
The expectation is that DeVonta Smith will need a huge performance on Sunday, but look for Kenneth Gainwell to flourish as well against a Chiefs team gashed through the air by the Chargers Austin Ekeler.
