A Brick police officer and two neighbors combined to rescue a woman who fell in the Metedeconk River on Saturday afternoon while checking the lines on her boat, which was tied to a dock.

The 69-year-old woman tumbled into the chilly water around 4:30 p.m. after losing her footing, Brick police said in a statement. She then yelled for help after trying to swim along the dock’s pilings and not being able to get out of the water due to the swift current, authorities said.

Two neighbors — Gene Serpentelli and Natia Chachava — heard her and found the woman after following her voice. While one retrieved a life jacket from the boat and tossed it to her, holding onto the straps, the other called 911.

Officer Ray LaPoint arrived and climbed to a beam under the dock to remove her from the river. She was treated at the scene for hypothermia and other injuries by Brick EMTs.

The woman declined further treatment but “stated how grateful and impressed she was with how quickly the police responded, according to the Brick police press release.

The woman was in the water for about 30 minutes.
