There soon will be an embarrassment of riches for fried chicken lovers in Harmar.
A new Popeyes fried chicken franchise is coming to the township — and it will be adjacent to the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on Harmar Landing Drive.
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc. (its full brand name) has received unanimous approval from the Harmar supervisors. Supervisor Bob Seibert said the township is anticipating the new restaurant will open early next year.
A spokesman for Popeyes could not be reached.
“It couldn’t be a better location with great visibility and easy access off of Route 28 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike,” Seibert said. “That should be pretty competitive to have two chicken places next door to each other.”
Seibert said he originally reached out to Cracker Barrel Restaurants about the location, but Cracker Barrel’s representatives responded they didn’t believe the location would suit their needs. So Seibert contacted Popeyes three years ago because he’s a fan of its food.
“I like the product. I think it’s a quality chicken sandwich that they offer, plus their menu is quite extensive,” Seibert said. “They did take a look at Harmar, and I thought they weren’t coming.”
But Popeyes kept Harmar in mind and finally made the decision to open there.
Supervisor Bob Exler said people are excited about Popeyes opening a restaurant here.
“We all love it. Obviously, in Harmar, we have a lot of fast food restaurants. But it’s always nice to get another one,” said Exler. “We’re happy they chose Harmar. We’re business friendly. I’ll enjoy the tax money we’re going to get, and I do like their fried chicken. They have a very good reputation.”
Popeyes isn’t the only franchise opening in Harmar.
Seibert said there soon will be a Starbucks opening in town as well near Harmar’s string of hotels. While Starbucks is technically already in Harmar, with a location in Target, this new one will be a freestanding.
“We’re meeting the needs of all the demographics in the community,” Seibert said. “It’s just another reason to stop in Harmar.”
