WeatherTalk: Catastrophic hurricane damage is along a narrow path - Grand Forks Herald

poloong.blogspot.com

Of the 28 tropical systems strong enough to have earned a name in this year's hurricane season, eleven have made landfall along the U.S. coastline, five in Louisiana. Eleven of the 28 storms have reached hurricane status, including three of the storms that hit Louisiana. In addition to the loss of life and destruction of homes and businesses, the financial burden to coastal states and the U.S. as a whole from an active tropical storm season like this one is tremendous.

It makes one wonder about people's decisions to move to the Southern coast. However, consider that the path of truly terrible destruction in a hurricane is limited to the area around and to the right of the storm's center. This might be 20-30 miles wide in a small storm up to 150-200 miles in a monster like 2005's Hurricane Katrina. If the Red River were a coastline, a storm that hit Fargo directly might leave Wahpeton and Grand Forks largely undamaged.
