Alabama Football: Storylines to follow in Alabama vs. Miss. State - Roll Tide Wire

poloong.blogspot.com

Nick Saban and the Alabama football team find themselves in a familiar situation heading into the SEC West matchup this weekend against Mississippi State.

If you remember, the opponent last season after suffering the loss to Texas A&M, was the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. Alabama would easily handle the cowbells and the Bulldogs, 49-9.

Alabama will be returning to the confines of Bryant-Denny Stadium this weekend which I am sure is be a relief for the players, coaches, and fans alike.

Mike Leach will be bringing his Air-Raid attack to Tuscaloosa with a seasoned veteran quarterback in Will Rogers who has already thrown for over 2,300 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Let’s take a look a the top storylines entering the Week 8 matchup between the Crimson Tide and the Bulldogs.

Defending the Air-Raid

Jordan Prather-USA TODAY Sports

Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach is famous for his Air-Raid offense that slings the ball all over the field. Leach’s attack has been extremely successful this season due to the fact he has an experienced signal caller in Will Rogers. Alabama has a solid track record against Leach’s offense while in the SEC. In 2020 the Bulldogs were shut out and in 2021 Alabama surrendered just nine points.

Continued growth at WR

I know some Alabama fans are concerned with the receiver group in Tuscaloosa and I will admit they are not as near as dominant as in previous seasons. It’s important to keep in mind they are very young and are learning as they go this season. The improvements have been noticeable and with Bryce Young back in the lineup, I believe you will see that improvement continue to show.

Correct special teams mistakes

Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

Alabama was on their heels enough in Knoxville this past weekend and the special teams did not help. A bad punt, a missed field goal, and a blunder a punt return cost the Tide against the Vols. All those things need to be cleaned up this week.

Can Alabama show some discipline?

Look, was the game against Tennessee poorly officiated? Yes. But the pre-snap penalties have been an ongoing issue for the Tide and that is not on the officials. That is simply a lack of discipline by Alabama. The coaches and players have talked about it all season, it is time to let your actions speak louder than your words.

Responding after a loss

As disappointing as last weekend’s loss was for Tide fans, everything that Alabama wants to accomplish is still out in front of them. It starts this week against Mississippi State. Will Alabama come out firing on all cylinders and look like a well-oiled machine like they are capable? To me, there is no bigger storyline than that for the Tide.
