Crews dealt with fires along Interstate Five, about a mile south of Tri City on Friday.

Kyle Reed of the Douglas Forest Protective Association said at approximately 11:20 a.m. firefighters with DFPA, South Umpqua Rural Fire Department, and Tri-City Fire Department, responded to a grass fire that was reported along the freeway near milepost 102 southbound.

Reed said while headed to the incident, two additional fires were reported about a mile, and a mile and a half to the north. Reed said a quick and aggressive initial attack by firefighters stopped the forward spread of the fires, at a combined total of one acre of grass and brush. Firefighters remained on the scene for a couple of hours, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines.

Reed said while the specific cause of the fires remains under investigation, it appears that all three fires are most likely vehicle related.

Reed said firefighters were assisted on the scene by personnel and equipment from the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians.
