The top 10 most detected great white sharks along the Cape, and their favorite spots - Boston Herald

Can the 14-foot great white shark nicknamed James stay king this year?

Tagged in 2014, James is the leader for the most great white shark detections along the Cape during the last decade with 25,140 total detections, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s new online archive that reveals where hundreds of great white sharks have visited along the Cape each year.

But other great whites that were tagged after the male apex predator are closing in on his crown.

Luke, a 12.5-foot male, since 2016 has been detected 20,010 times for second place as of now.

And tagged in 2017, Turbo — a 10.5-foot male — has been detected 18,592 times for bronze at the start of the 2021 shark season.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s new online tool, called the “White Shark Logbook,” helps people see the historical detection data for tagged white sharks along Cape Cod. People can learn where the great white sharks have been in Cape waters by month and by year, and users can also learn some biographical information about each shark.

“I love that the Logbook provides a platform that allows people to learn more about the individual white sharks that visit Cape Cod each year,” said Megan Winton, a research scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

The most popular place for James to hang out during one season has been off the coast of Chatham, with 2,561 detections at the Chatham North Inlet acoustic receiver in 2016. That favorite spot for James is identified with a large, red bubble on the White Shark Logbook.

Luke’s top pick, on the other hand, has been off Provincetown/Truro — with 1,208 detections at the Peaked Hill 1 receiver in 2016.

And Turbo’s favorite spot has been in the middle of the Outer Cape. He was detected 2,544 times at the Coast Guard Beach receiver off Eastham in 2018.

Among the top 10 most detected sharks, the Provincetown/Truro region has been the most popular place to hang out. Four of the top 10 sharks — Luke, Jules, Padre and Alex — were detected the most in the Peaked Hill area.

Three of the top 10 sharks — Turbo, Sean and Big Bopper 1 — have spent the most time at Coast Guard Beach off Eastham. Nearby at Nauset Beach South off Orleans, a top 10 shark named Sandy has hung out the most.

James and Scratchy in the top 10 have called Chatham North Inlet home the most.

The data available through the logbook has been collected by acoustic receivers, which detect and record the presence of more than 200 individual white sharks that have been tagged by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries since 2010.

The Logbook “should not be interpreted as advice as to what beaches or parts of water are safe,” the website reads. “The only way to completely prevent a close encounter with a shark is to stay on shore.”
