Lake County authorities were searching Tuesday for a man who they say sexually assaulted a teenage girl Monday evening along a Beach Park bike path.
The sheriff’s office said the attack happened at about 7:30 p.m. along the Robert McClory bike path, just north of Yorkhouse Road.
Authorities said a 16-year-old girl was walking along the path when she was approached by a man who came out of the tree line. The man grabbed her, shoved her to the ground and then forcefully removed her clothes and sexually assaulted her, according to reports.
The girl began screaming, which attracted the attention of a nearby resident. The resident began yelling, too, at which time the offender fled, authorities said.
Police set up a perimeter and began a search. A police dog tracked to an area where authorities think the offender got into a vehicle and drove away.
The suspect was described as thin, possibly in his 20s, sporting numerous metal barrettes in his hair, police said.
The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division at (847) 377-4000.
