CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, MI – A popular state park along Lake Michigan is set to reopen.

Fisherman’s Island State Park is set to fully reopen after high water and storm damage that caused the partial closure of its main access road and campsites 36-80.

The DNR now says that conditions have improved and the park road has been repaired. As a result, the day-use area, located along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Charlevoix County, will open to vehicles Friday, June 11.

“Fisherman’s Island, along with several other state parks and harbors, has experienced the impacts of historic high water levels along the Great Lakes,” said Tom Copenhaver, park supervisor.

“We’ve been working hard to complete repairs to the road and our entire staff is excited to fully open up the park again this year.”

New reservations at the park’s rustic campground will also open for overnight camping dates beginning on June 11.

Reservations for those added camping opportunities will be available in the reservation system beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 9 and can be made at MiDNRReservations.com.

Fisherman’s Island State Park boasts more than six miles of unspoiled Lake Michigan shoreline, and the south end is designated as primitive. The island for which the park was named is located off the shore of the day-use area and during times of lower water levels, the island becomes a peninsula.

The 2,678-acre park also consists of rolling dunes covered with maple, birch and aspen broken up by bogs of cedar and black spruce, a rustic campground, a 2.5-mile hiking trail and a day-use area.
