All the preseason hype in the East County normally starts with Helix and then includes Steele Canyon and Grossmont. Granite Hills lost to all three of them in 2019 and finished 5-6 after a playoff defeat against La Costa Canyon.
The Eagles haven’t lost since.
Justus McComb threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns and Joaquin Thomas scored a pair of long TDs to lift No. 9 Granite Hills to a 20-7 victory over No. 10 Grossmont on Friday night at Valley Stadium.
“This is our revenge tour,” McComb said. “We lost to four teams on our schedule this season. We’re trying to get some revenge this year.”
McComb was 10 of 20 passing, plus he rushed 14 times for 89 yards as Granite Hills moved to 3-0, while Grossmont slipped to 1-1.
“Defense played lights out tonight,” Granite Hills coach Kellan Cobbs said. “They were flying around making plays. I can’t say enough.”
The momentum shifted early in the Eagles’ favor as Grossmont flubbed its first punt attempt, giving the Eagles the ball on the 15-yard line. Four plays later, McComb hit Angel Almazan for a 6-yard TD.
After Grossmont missed a field-goal attempt, Thomas raced 76 yards for a score and a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter.
“I just saw the open field,” Thomas said. “The O-line did their job. I just had to do my job and get it in the end zone.”
Late in the half, Thomas snared a fly from McComb and took off for an 89-yard TD and a 20-0 halftime lead. Thomas finished with 80 yards rushing and 92 receiving.
“Great ball by Justus,” Thomas said. “He put it right where only I could touch it. Perfect. Hauled it in and took it for six.”
Said McComb, who is headed to Southwest Minnesota State next season, “He’s a great stud for us. Only a sophomore. I’ve known that kid since he was 5 and always knew he was going to be great.”
Grossmont piled up 463 yards last week but had only 78 at halftime against the Eagles.
The Foothillers made up some ground in the second half as Justin Brown finished 20-of-42 passing for 266 yards with one interception by Michael Wallace.
Robert Tucker, who is headed to Cornell, scored on an 11-yard run with 4:41 to play in the third quarter, but that closed the scoring.
“We just made too many mistakes,” Grossmont coach Tom Karlo said. “You can’t do that against a good team.”
Cobbs cited the defensive play of freshman Jordan Glaze, junior Zach Burton, senior Jack Dettweiler and Wallace. Also punter Camden Vance. “He really flipped the field for us,” Cobbs said.
“Great team win,” McComb said. “Everyone was doing their job. Defense played great.”
