AVOCA, MI - The body of a teenage girl was found in St. Clair County Sunday morning, sparking a Michigan State Police investigation.

Leah Conner, a 16-year-old from Avoca, was found dead on the Wadhams-to-Avoca Trail the morning of March 7, according to Michigan State Police Lt. Lizabeth Rich.

The trail spans 12 miles from Avoca/Kenockee Township to Port Huron Charter Township.

Conner left home to walk on Saturday, March 6 around 11:20 a.m., police said, but she did not return home.

Her family reported her missing around 4:15 p.m. the same day.

Troopers searched the trail and found her body near the Trestle Bridge.

The Michigan State Police K9 unit was utilized in the search efforts.

An investigation by Michigan State Police into the teen’s death is ongoing.

“Please note that law enforcement does not feel that there is a threat to the public,” said Rich in a follow-up message, adding that “a death in this manner is considered suspicious until an autopsy has been completed” after which an update can be provided on the incident.

Anyone with information or knowledge of the incident is asked to contact the Michigan State Police Lapeer Post at 810-664-2905.
