SAN ANTONIO – The aftermath of an 18-wheeler fire has led to long delays on Interstate 10 on the East Side as crews clear the scene.
San Antonio police said the incident began around 4:15 a.m. Friday when the driver of the big rig crashed into a construction zone in the median of I-10 near Foster Road.
The driver told KSAT that he was unable to see the road because it was too dark. After the crash, the cab of the big rig caught on fire but the driver was able to safely escape.
It appears the cab of the truck has fully melted, and the trailer that was carrying rebar spilled its load.
Hazmat crews were called to after fuel from the gas tank spilled.
A silver vehicle also crashed at the scene, but details surrounding that incident are unknown at this time. It is unclear if anyone in that vehicle was injured.
As of 6 a.m., only one main lane on I-10 remains open in both directions, causing backups in the area. Traffic is also being diverted to the access road.
This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as more information becomes available.
