EARLIER
FINAL — It was far from a thing of beauty but Arkansas won its fourth straight SEC game Tuesday, taking down Mississippi State 61-45. Connor Vanover and Moses Moody each scored 13 points for the Razorbacks, and Justin Smith and Devo Davis had 10 apiece.
Smith grabbed 10 rebounds, and Davis and Vanover had eight. Moody added seven. The Razorbacks win despite hitting just 2 of 17 from deep. Mississippi State was 2 of 13 on layups and shot 30.6% for the game. Tolu Smith scored a team-high 10 points for Mississippi State.
3:48, 2H — We’ve hit the final media timeout of the game. Arkansas leads by 15. Connor Vanover leads all scorers with 13 points. He also has eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. The Razorbacks are plus-16 with him on the floor tonight. Moses Moody also has 11 points and Justin Smith 10, all in the second half. Mississippi State is shooting 30.4% in the second half and has scored at a .580 PPP clip tonight. That is really, really bad.
3:55, 2H — Devo Davis gets into the lane off the bounce and misses a left-handed floater, but Justin Smith cleans it up. Razorbacks take a 55-40 lead after a Smith breakaway dunk.
7:21, 2H — Jalen Tate and Connor Vanover working the pick-and-roll to perfection lately. Tate hits Vanover for a dunk, then, Vanover, moments later, hits a 3 from the left wing. Crowd goes nuts. Razorbacks up 49-37. That was Vanover's fifth made 3 in league play. He was 4 of 24 before that make.
9:01, 2H — Devo Davis with a nice no-look feed to Connor Vanover in transition for a dunk. Razorbacks’ lead is 44-37. I thought Davis was going to opt to hit Justin Smith for a lob, which would have blown the roof off this place. Still, much-needed bucket to slow the Bulldogs’ run.
10:05, 2H — JD Notae had his pocket picked and D.J. Stewart adds a dunk on the other end, outrunning Connor Vanover in the open floor. Bulldogs then add a corner 3. Razorbacks’ lead is down to 42-37 after some terrible shot selection and turnovers.
11:59, 2H — Mississippi State finally showing some signs of life offensively. The Bulldogs have scored six straight points and will have a chance to push their run to 7-0 out of the media timeout. Connor Vanover fouled Tolu Smith under the rim on a layup attempt but he powered through. Arkansas’ lead is 42-32. Smith has a team-high eight points for Mississippi State tonight. Moses Moody still leads Arkansas with 11. JD Notae has nine in his 15 minutes. Desi Sills has not played in this half. He injured his shoulder/collarbone in the first half.
13:43, 2H — Bulldogs guard Deivon Smith fouled out being a bit too aggressive defensively. He missed all three of his shots and did not score. Arkansas then goes on a quick 4-0 run behind a very nice bucket from Connor Vanover and a steal and dunk by Jalen Tate. On the Vanover score, he got a little mean on his way up. JD Notae and Moses Moody loved it. They both flexed in Vanover’s direction on his way back down the floor. Hogs up 42-26.
16:25, 2H — Devo Davis corrals a Mississippi State miss from 3 and kicks off a one-man break. He gets to the rim and draws a foul. He hits both free throws. Davis has eight points. Justin Smith then adds a bucket in transition. This game is all Razorbacks now. Hogs up 38-24. What a wild, wild game this has been.
17:25, 2H — Jalen Tate with a solid find on a baseline out of bounds play to Justin Smith. Arkansas’ lead is 10. It is Smith’s first score of the game. He does have five rebounds. Smith is a plus-13 when on the floor tonight.
18:04, 2H — Great ball movement by the Razorbacks — all five players touched in on the possession — leads to a Connor Vanover dunk. Razorbacks lead 32-24 after his second bucket of the game. The people like Vanover dunks.
19:40, 2H — D.J. Stewart hit a floater in the lane to get the second half scoring going. Moses Moody, moments later, was hit with an offensive foul. Then Mississippi State was called for an offensive foul on a moving screen. The madness continues. Arkansas up 28-24.
HALF — Fittingly, I guess, Abdul Ado picked up a loose ball in the final seconds of the half and threw down a dunk. Arkansas leads 28-22 at the break. Moses Moody has a game-high 11 points, JD Notae added nine and Devo Davis six. The rest of the team is 1 of 13 from the floor. The teams combined for 24 turnovers — MSU 14, UA 10 — and both are shooting under 33%. Arkansas hit 1 of 10 looks from 3, and the Bulldogs missed 8 of their 9 layups, according to StatBroadcast.
:26.7, 1H — Moses Moody hits two free throws to extend Arkansas’ run to 11-0 and its lead to 28-20. Moody has 11 points, which is a game high.
:50, 1H — Terrific driving score from JD Notae, who finished with his left hand over Abdul Ado. Razorbacks on a 9-0 run and lead 26-20. Notae and Moses Moody each have nine points.
1:40, 1H — JD Notae gets into the lane off a dribble handoff from Connor Vanover and is fouled. Razorbacks take the lead on a pair of free throws. It’s their first lead since it was a 2-0 game. Connor Vanover then adds a putback after a Notae missed floater. Arkansas up 24-20.
3:16, 1H — Moses Moody cans a DEEP 3 from the top of the key, and we’re tied at 20. Mississippi State missed two free throws coming out of the media timeout. Moody has nine points on 4 of 6 shooting.
3:55, 1H — Great stretch — I guess? — by Arkansas to get back in this game. Mississippi State snapped the 12-0 Hogs run with two free throws. Bulldogs lead 20-17 at the final media break of the half. Moses Moody and Devo Davis each have six points to lead the Razorbacks, and JD Notae has five. Arkansas is now 7 of 25 shooting and 0 of 9 from deep. Iverson Molinar and Tolu Smith have six apiece for Mississippi State, too.
4:25, 1H — Justin Smith misses a 3 from the right wing, it’s rebounded by Mississippi State but Moses Moody picks the Bulldogs forward’s pocket and adds a dunk. JD Notae then came away with a steal, got fouled and got to the line. He hits both and suddenly Arkansas is down just one. Razorbacks on a 12-0 run.
5:14, 1H — Moses Moody cans another midrange jumper, this time from the pocket right of the lane. He is up to four points on 2 of 4 shooting. Arkansas’ deficit is 18-13.
5:51, 1H — JD Notae breaks down his defender off the bounce and scores at the rim. Good to see him finish from close in. He was 18 of 44 at the rim last month. Razorbacks down 18-11.
7:22, 1H — Devo Davis scores twice in a heartbeat and Arkansas’ deficit is 18-9. Davis has six points on 3 of 5 from the floor. Ben Howland immediately calls for time.
7:52, 1H — Arkansas is scoring .227 points per possession to this point. I’ve literally never seen a figure that low. Devo Davis and Moses Moody have Arkansas’ two scores. The rest of the team is 0 of 12. Mississippi State leads 18-5 at the under-8 timeout. It is shooting 28% and 1 of 8 on layups, per StatBroadcast.
8:40, 1H — Moses Moody hits a midrange jumper left of the lane for Arkansas’ first bucket since the 18:14 mark. Razorbacks down 16-5. Moody used a nice shot fake to get his defender off his feet. Arkansas is now 2 of 18 shooting.
10:23, 1H — JD Notae hits a free throw and snaps Arkansas’ scoreless streak that lasted nearly eight minutes. He split the free throws, though. Bulldogs up 14-3.
11:57, 1H — Looked like Desi Sills got hit hard on a layup attempt that missed. No foul was called, but Sills stayed down on the floor favoring his shoulder/collarbone area. He was escorted to the locker room by a team trainer. Eric Musselman picked up a tech on his way back to the bench after checking on Sills. Bulldogs lead 6-2 at the under-12 media timeout. The teams are 3 of 20 from the floor with 12 turnovers.
13:37, 1H — Vance Jackson misses a right-wing 3, Devo Davis makes a great hustle play for an offensive rebound, then Jackson travels looking to drive right from the wing. He gets yanked. Arkansas is 1 of 7 shooting with seven turnovers. The scoring trough has reached 5:19.
14:02, 1H — Jaylin Williams checks into the game and immediately gets credited with a steal. Several possessions later he misses a right-wing 3 on one end then is called for a block defensively. Mississippi State added a layup on the play and now leads 6-2.
15:35, 1H — Connor Vanover missed a right-corner 3 on one end and Mississippi State got out in transition but couldn’t capitalize. Razorbacks ball out of the first media timeout. Bulldogs lead 3-2. The teams are a combined 2 of 11 from the floor, and Arkansas has four turnovers.
16:04, 1H — Moses Moody misses a wide open left-wing 3. He has missed his last eight attempts from that area of the floor. On the other end, the Bulldogs use an offensive rebound to get to the line and split a pair. Mississippi State up 3-2.
17:09, 1H — Moses Moody travels attempting to get off a leaner right of the lane. Arkansas has turned it over three times in the early going. This game has not been the prettiest to watch so far.
17:54, 1H — Devo Davis cleans up a Connor Vanover miss around the rim for Arkansas’ first bucket. Mississippi State answers with an Iverson Molinar jumper.
19:12, 1H — Arkansas’ first possession ends in a Justin Smith turnover. Jalen Tate found him near the rim but he hesitated to go with for a layup because of Abdul Ado. He falls and his foot touches the baseline.
Pregame
Arkansas’ starting lineup: Jalen Tate, Davonte Davis, Moses Moody, Justin Smith and Connor Vanover.
Freshman forward Jaylin Williams went through full warmups tonight and his mobility appeared to be fine. He suffered a bone bruise to his right knee during the Razorbacks’ loss at Oklahoma State on Saturday. He is wearing a padded sleeve over his right knee.
Smith scored 18 points against the Cowboys, his most in a game since pouring in 22 in Arkansas’ win over Oral Roberts in December. He finished 9 of 14 2-point looks and also handed out a career-high four assists. Smith has 10 assists over the last four games.
On Saturday, Moody against bounced back from a poor scoring night vs. Ole Miss with a solid performance. He’s averaging 22.6 points immediately following a single-digit scoring game. We’ll see if he finds his touch from deep in this game. He is 2 of his last 12 beyond the arc since hitting three 3s at Alabama.
Mississippi State’s starters: D.J. Stewart, Iverson Molinar, Deivon Smith, Tolu Smith and Abdul Ado.
The Bulldogs enter tonight’s game off a 39-point home win over Iowa State on Saturday in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, but they have lost four of their last five games in SEC play since jumping to a 4-2 start. Mississippi State is 2-2 in true road games this season and in conference play.
Molinar and Stewart are the key players for Ben Howland, who is in his sixth season with the Bulldogs. Molinar has knocked down 23 of 45 attempts from 3-point range this season and 11 of 21 in league games. Both players have a shot rate north of 29% in SEC play, which places them in the top 10 in the conference. They each average 17.6 points per game.
Deivon Smith is a 6-1 freshman guard to watch for as well. He has the SEC’s No. 5 assist rate in conference-only games at 26.7%. He finished with nine assists against one turnover against the Cyclones over the weekend. Tolu Smith is the team’s most aggressive rebounder, averaging 8.6 boards per game to go with 12.9 points.
Ado, who tipped in a shot with less than one second to play the last time these teams met, is adding 5.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He has the fourth-best block rate in SEC-only games, per KenPom data.
