COLUMBUS, Ohio — A majority, but not all, of Ohio’s high school sports teams are following the state’s coronavirus guidelines, according to observations made by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

The subject came up Thursday during Gov. Mike DeWine’s routine coronavirus briefing. DeWine deferred to Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, who said he plans to inquire with the OHSAA on whether teams are following the state’s guidelines.

The OHSAA also sent results of its Week 7 “observers program” Thursday to member schools, obtained by cleveland.com. The OHSAA sent 91 observers to football, boys soccer, girls soccer and volleyball games during Week 7 of the fall sports season. Those observers watched for whether teams are maintaining 6 feet of social distancing when not competing, wearing facial coverings and satisfying other criteria derived from the state department of health’s Responsible Restart Ohio program.

Those observers reported the following from the last week:

Participants maintained 6 feet of social distancing at all times, other than those on the field or court: 48.9 percent of 182 home and away teams passed; 55 percent of home teams passed, 43 percent of away teams passed.

Facial coverings worn when not on the field or court: 57.4 percent of 181 teams passed; 63 percent of home teams and 48 percent of away teams passed.

Players, coaches, officials or spectators did not congregate before, during or after the game: 75 percent of 91 host facilities passed.

Sideline/bench personnel were socially distanced and wearing masks at all times: 75.8 percent of 182 team coaches and personnel passed; 79 percent of home and 73 percent of away teams passed.

No physical contact outside of game play (such as high-fives, handshakes, etc.): 75.6 percent of 181 teams passed; 74 percent of home teams, 78 percent of away teams passed.

The OHSAA report shows home teams are passing more categories than away teams. It also revealed fewer teams are passing social distancing guidelines off the field.

Husted said Thursday discipline and consequences “lies with the Ohio High School Athletic Association.”

“The tools they promised to use were things like disqualifications, forfeitures and suspensions of seasons,” he said.

Husted added, “We want them to have fun. We want them to have the games, but we have to make sure the rules are followed. It’s in the best interests of the schools that these rules are followed. If you don’t follow them, you’re going to have a spread and you’re going to have coaches and players with the virus. And you have cost yourself your own season.”

DeWine began Thursday’s briefing by disclosing that Ohio has 2,178 new coronavirus cases, setting a state record increase, within a 24-hour period. The 21-day rolling average of new cases is 1,338. The state’s positivity rate increased to 5.4 percent on Monday, which is the most recent date the state has provided data for that statistic.

Earlier this week, the virus forced North Olmsted to cancel its Division II football playoff game Friday at Avon and end its season after one player tested positive. Nine additional student-athletes and two staff members are in quarantine, following contact tracing, the district said Monday.

Exposure to the virus at multiple elementary schools within the Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools District led to the temporary suspension of all high school athletics there, but most sports have since resumed activity. Willoughby South is set to play Benedictine on Friday in a Division II football playoff game.
