LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - High schools are gearing up for another night of Friday night football.
Scott County Athletic Director Steve Helton says they had a successful first week and have plans in place to keep that going.
It was a battle of the birds Friday night, but the whole season will be a battle against an early cancellation.
“It’s all about our kids," Helton said. "A little sacrifice here and there in order for them to have a chance to play, I think is worth it.”
With this game in particular, the Scott County School District sacrificed thousands of fans.
“The game last year between Scott County and Great Crossing, between six and seven thousand people. Now we’re looking at less than a thousand people and we’ve probable put more planning into this game than we did last year,” Helton said.
Helton says now fans will watch from their homes through a live stream or even this drive thru theater they set up.
“We’re not the NCAA, but we’ve really tried to install a bubble for our kids," Helton said.
Tonight’s game following the KHSAA’s criticism that some schools didn’t adhere to their COVID-19 guidelines at last week’s games. Francine McIntyre wasn’t sure she’d get to see her grandsons play tonight.
“It wasn’t a good feeling because I’m a big football fan. Plus my boys played, now my grandsons and things so I’m constantly going to the games. So we look forward to it," McIntyre said.
Helton says student athletes will only get their chance to play if schools follow the guidelines.
Each athlete was allowed two family members to attend in person, but the district did provide free access to a livestream of the game for all of the fans that couldn’t attend.
