The actor took to Instagram Wednesday to reveal that he and his wife, Lauren and their daughters Jasmine, 4, and Tiana, 2, contracted the virus after being around family friends. Though they have been sick, they are feeling better after almost three weeks. They contracted the virus from close family friends.
"I wanted to give you guys a little helpful update on things that have been going on on my end for the past two-and-a-half to three weeks now. So the update is this: my wife Lauren as well as my two baby girls and myself, we have all tested positive for COVID-19," the actor said in a video message posted on his Instagram. "I could tell you that this has been one of the most challenging and difficult things we have ever had to endure as a family, and for me, too, personally as well," he said, adding that he's "gone through some doozies in the past."
He went on to explain that testing positive for the virus is "much different than overcoming nasty injuries," "being evicted" or "being broke," which he says he has faced "more than a few times." He explained that battling the virus has been more personal because his priority is "to always protect my family. And protect my children, my loved ones."
"I wish it was only me who tested positive, but it wasn't, it was my entire family, so this one was a real kick in the gut," he said. "But I am happy to tell you guys that we as a family are good. We're on the other end of it, we're on the other side. We're no longer contagious, and we are — thank God — we are healthy." He added that his family has "gotten through COVID-19 stronger and healthier."
Johnson recounted how his children had sore throats in the early days of having the virus but have "bounced back" and now life is back to normal with "happy babies running around and playing." However, Johnson admits that for himself and his wife, the journey was more of a "rough go" with COVID-19 and they did isolate as a family after testing positive.
Johnson also acknowledged that everyone has been affected by the virus in some way whether battling the virus itself or having loved ones sick. "We are counting our blessings right now because we’re well aware that it isn’t always the case that you get on the other end of COVID-19 stronger and healthier," he said.
After contracting the virus from family friends, Johnson emphasized that "these are people who we love and trust and these are people who we still love and trust." "They are devastated by the way they were the ones who picked it up. They have no idea where they picked it up. They’re devastated that it led to them infecting our family," he shared.
He added that he understood the desire to see and be with loved ones, especially amid difficult times, but after contracting the virus, he now has extreme "discipline" with health and safety measures for people he cares about — including advocating for people to be tested before visiting him and his family. The actor also emphasized the importance of wearing masks, adding that he is baffled by politicians who "will take this idea of wearing masks and make it a political agenda." "It has nothing to do with politics," Johnson said. "Wear your mask. It is the right thing to do and it is the responsible thing to do… for your fellow human beings."
After a three-week battle, Johnson said that what helped his family recover was their "commitment to wellness," emphasizing the importance of doing whatever one can to boost their immune system as COVID-19 continues on.
