Firefighters Saturday tackled a small brush fire on Highway 74 west of Mountain Center in southwest Riverside County.
The fire, reported about 4:10 p.m., was burning in the San Bernardino National Forest. Crews from the U.S. Forest Service and Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department were there.
By about 7 p.m. the fire’s forward rate of spread was stopped at 1.5 acres and it was 50% contained, officials at the forest said, adding it was a mile west of McCall Park Road. The cause was under investigation.
The California Highway Patrol had closed Highway 74 between Borco Street east of Hemet and Highway 243 in the mountains.
