Denver to reopen some recreation centers in May — and more to follow in June and August - The Denver Post

Some of Denver’s recreation centers that have been closed since the beginning of the pandemic will reopen in May, with more to follow in the months to come, Parks and Recreation officials announced Friday. Public pools won’t reopen until June at the earliest, and even then, not all at once.

“We have 30 rec centers,” department spokeswoman Cynthia Karvaski told The Denver Post. “Twenty of them will have something happening by August.”

The phased reopening will last through the fourth quarter, Karvaski said, with an eye to balancing the relaxation of public health orders with hiring back staff who were laid off or furloughed.

The first seven recreation centers reopening are spread throughout the city covering the northeast, southeast, central and the Highlands neighborhoods.

To start, only three recreation centers — Carla Madison in City Park, Eisenhower in University Hills and Green Valley Ranch in its namesake neighborhood — will begin taking hourlong workout reservations on April 26, a week before they reopen on May 3.

The department will charge $2 per workout block, and staff will clean between each reservation, according to the city’s website. Patrons are limited to one reservation a day.

In early May, four more rec centers — Cook Park, Hiawatha Davis Jr., Highland and Platt Park — will reopen for some in-person programs, the city’s website says.

College View, Cook Park, Hiawatha Davis Jr., Johnson and La Alma recreation centers will offer some after-school programs in early May as well, while the following will offer meal programs:

  • 5090 Broadway Recreation Center
  • Athmar Recreation Center
  • Atzlan Recreation Center
  • College View Recreation Center
  • Cook Park Recreation Center
  • Green Valley Ranch Recreation Center
  • Harvard Gulch Recreation Center
  • Harvey Park Recreation Center
  • Hiawatha Davis Jr. Recreation Center
  • Johnson Recreation Center
  • La Alma Recreation Center
  • Montbello Recreation Center
  • Montclair Recreation Center
  • Swansea Recreation Center

Another wave of reopenings will follow on June 7 and August 16, Karvaski said.

For those looking to swim in the summer, eight of the city’s 16 outdoor pools are expected to open in June and nine of the city’s 15 indoor pools in August. The final round of pool reopenings will come in the last quarter of the year.
