LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Many of our most vulnerable populations like the elderly are getting or have already received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Matt Anderson, the Senior Medical Director at UW-La Crosse, said research shows that just because someone gets the vaccine doesn't mean they are at their full immunity right away.

Anderson said immunity doesn't start to occur build in the body until after a week following the second dose of the COVID vaccine. This means people are still strongly urged to maintain social distancing and other crucial CDC guidelines to keep you and others safe.

"We need to keep our circle of contacts small, especially for those who are not vaccinated at this point," Anderson said. "It is important that we don't interact with large numbers of people during this time because we all could contribute to the ongoing community spread. We know that some elderly frail individuals may not mount as much of a robust immune response than others, so we need to be thoughtful about that."

Because the supply of COVID-19 vaccine in the United States is currently limited, CDC is providing recommendations to federal, state, and local governments about who should be vaccinated first. CDC’s recommendations are based on those of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), an independent panel of medical and public health experts.

Each state has its own plan for deciding which groups of people will be vaccinated first. You can contact your state health department for more information on its plan for COVID-19 vaccination.

The goal is for everyone to be able to get a COVID-19 vaccination as soon as large quantities of vaccine are available. As the vaccine supply increases, more groups will be added to receive the vaccination. Learn more about CDC recommendations for who should get vaccinated first.
